“In San Diego County, the Kumeyaah have been experimenting with fire to bring back valuable plant species and watershed health. For similar reasons, but on a larger scale, the Karuk and Hoopa are among the communities living in the Cascades and coastal ranges that have ignited controlled (or prescribed) fires to regain cultural resources. In the Sierras, the North Fork Mono have been especially active in returning what Ron Goode, its chairman, describes as “good fire” to the foothills. ‘This is old land,’ Goode notes. ‘It’s been in use for thousands and thousands of years.
