“Fashion is a vehicle for identity expression, as our social value and personhood can be invented and validated through the clothing we wear. Fast fashion provides a temporary solution to the need for expression, by projecting onto the world an aspirational version of ourselves. This innate need leads to equating identity exploration with overconsumption, a desire especially dominant as we come of age, discovering the person we want to become. Though this pursuit of self-expression is necessary, the means by which we achieve it must be sustainable.
